we call our moon "the moon"but other moons have names and we call our god "god"and other gods have names.why is that?
The Moon is called the Moon because it is our moon. We didn't know that other planets had moons when the word was coined. We didn't know that other planets met our 21st century definition of planet. When we discovered that other planets had moons, we decided to call them moons, but to give them distinctive names, so as to distinguish them from our Moon. Not to mention that every other planet in the Solar System that has a moon, has multiple moons, save our Earth.
As for the Abrahamaic God (which I believe you are referring to): In the Hebrew scriptures, God is identified as having a name, which is "YHWH" (the Hebrew alphabet does not have vowels). This is commonly rendered in English as "Yahweh." or "He Brings Into Existence Whatever Exists" or more commonly rendered as "I am what I am."
The Jewish people found it inappropriate to refer to God with his name, for they found themselves not worthy to speak the name. Thus, the custom was that whenever YHWH appeared in the scriptures, to simply speak "Adonai" which roughly translates as "Lord." This custom lead to the modern use of God, as opposed to the use of the Divine Name.
The same is true in Islam. The title "Allah" is simply an Arabic word which roughly translates to English as "God."
In religious traditions with a pantheon (i.e. Greeks, Romans, Egyptians), there was little issue with referring to each god by name. This was also necessary, as how does one distinguish between each god, without having to go into unnecessary details.
Cultural differences lead to these things.
The rule of thumb is that "god" (lowercase) refers to a divine being in a polytheistic (many gods) tradition, and that "God" (g capitalized) refers to the God of a monotheistic (only one god) tradition.
No I'm just kidding, my real question is. I've heard that the moon is moving away from the earth. how far is it moving per year, Happy new year
Between 1 and 2 inches per year.
A Blue Moon is just the second full moon in a month. For the Americas and Europe and Africa it's December 2009. For Australia it will be January 2010 because it's already the new year there, so their Blue Moon month will be another month, another year and another decade.
